The Winding Road to Sabrina's Crossing

Funny moment in college - 2003.

Why, after eight full seasons in Europe, did I decide to start a blog? It's not as if there wasn't plenty of opportunity before!

The ability and the time has always been there.

Though it has been a while since I've used that part of my brain, I didn't just now discover the ability to write. Spending hour after hour in the gym doesn't equate to using the 'academic' part of your brain for a sustained amount of time.

But it was time to start putting my experiences to paper and sharing them.

A typical day for me, in-season, in Europe, provides me with a lot of midday downtime. Usually I will have a morning practice or workout, the afternoon off to relax and recover, and then head back to the gym for another practice in the evening.

So typically, I 'work' between 3-5 hours a day. For you math whizzes out there, that leaves an enormous amount of free time during the day to do as I please.

Me & my 3 rascally nieces.
I had always thought about blogging, but I guess was never motivated enough to get started. Or maybe I just didn't feel like I had anything worthwhile to say.

Occasionally I would jot things down. But those thoughts weren't anything I wanted to share with the rest of the world.

Recently however, I feel like my world has broadened, and my interests have expanded beyond basketball.

In the last few years, for example, I have gotten more and more interested in training, nutrition, fitness and health.

To survive as a professional athlete longer than a few years, those things have to become important to you. Your body is how you make your living, so you have to figure out how to best take care of it.

Game in Poland - 2006.
The last push to blog came when I was listening to a Jillian Michaels podcast a couple weeks ago. I listen to her on a regular basis because I think she is a provider of great information, on a wide-range of topics.

JM was talking to a caller who was interested in becoming a personal trainer, and she suggested that the caller start a blog; write about the things she was interested in, and had a passion for.

I thought to myself, 'this is what I should be doing!'

One of the messages that is continually passed on in JM's podcasts is living your truth/following your passion, and having it, in turn, lead you in the right direction.

And that is something I feel is very important as well. Living and working your passion is what leads to living a happy life!

So I made the decision: it was time to start doing something a little more productive than watching TV shows/movies on the Internet, and updating my Facebook. Though, I'm sure I will still find plenty of time for that, I wanted to dedicate a few hours in the afternoons and evenings to bettering myself, and stimulating my mind.

On my way up Mt. St. Helen's - 2010.
Another reason I wanted to start a blog is that I think it might help me stumble into my next career path. What will I write about most often? What will be the things I most-enjoy writing about? What will I get the most feedback on?

I feel like I have a wide variety of things that I am passionate about, but haven't quite figured out what is next for me. And there's nothing like putting thoughts to paper to help you sort through mounds of ideas.

If I am writing about the things I am passionate about, the things I find important, and the things I believe in, hopefully the excitement I feel, will be communicated to you, the reader!

I am excited to be starting this journey. I have received some great feedback since I started writing a week ago. I look forward to any and all feedback I'll get in the coming months.

As always, I am very appreciative of those who are reading!
