Helping the Kiddos of St. Jude!

My 3 awesome nieces.

This week must be 'do right' week. On Tuesday, I wrote an entry about The Girl Effect, an organization aimed at furthering the education of girls living in poverty. And last night I received an email from my college teammate, Britt about a St. Jude's fundraiser she's been working on.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was founded in 1962, and is a leading pediatric treatment and research facility focused on children's catastrophic diseases. The premise behind the founding of St. Jude was that, "no child should die in the dawn of life".

St. Jude is one of a few pediatric research organizations in the U.S. where families never pay for treatments that aren't covered by their insurance. And families without insurance are never asked to pay for treatment. All medically eligible patients are treated without regard to their ability to pay.

St. Jude also provides families with transportation, lodging, and meals. Daily costs to operate the hospital and support facilities hover around $1.7 million per day. That's where the importance of charitable contributions comes in. Public donations provide 75% of St. Jude's funding! Without our donations, St. Jude would not be able to continue researching and treating childhood illnesses and diseases.

Me with the 3 wiggle-worms.
Since the hospital opened in 1962, the work done at St. Jude has helped push the overall survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20%, to the current rate of 80%.

Britt made the point that, while she's been blessed with two healthy, beautiful kids; and I have three of the cutest, healthiest nieces myself, not all of us can be so lucky. We can all help St. Jude continue its lifesaving work against pediatric diseases with our donations. Britt is hosting her event until October 29th. Check out the links below for more information!

Thanks! And hope you have an awesome weekend!
